Burrows & Badgers lijkt een kruising te zijn tussen een traditioneel skirmish wargame, met warbands die tegen elkaar strijden, zoals in Saga of Warcry, en een RPG, met karakters die proberen te overleven en zich per spel ontwikkelen. Petra Schulein legt het uit op Poldercon.
De personages zijn niet de standaard mensen/dwergen/orks/elfen, maar dieren – het is een fabelachtig wargame, zogezegd. Uitgever Osprey noemt het een “tabletop skirmish game of anthropomorphic animals” (…) Your tabletop becomes part of the Kingdom of Northymbra, the scene of the action, with ruined buildings, haunted forests, and misty marshes where the skirmishes and battles happen. The aim of the game is to defeat your opponent, while keeping your characters alive and developing their skills and abilities”.
